That's Neat

I was young and impressionable when I embarked on my first ever "Deep Sea" fishing trip with the Canteen Crew back in the seventies.  Although I had some experience with freshwater bank fishing and some salt water fishing from docks and jetties, this was my first journey out on a large chartered vessel. I believe it was the Norma K out of Briele NJ and I was thrilled to go!

The very early morning was pretty uneventful save for the axproximate 20 or so patron asses that hung out of the bus window at the Canteen to greet my fathers (Richard's) exit from the bar. Entertaining yes... but certainly not a pretty sight for sure. Anyway after an intersesting drunk fest of a bus ride and an even longer boat ride I was ready to fish!

There must have been at least 50 men prepared to fish and or pretend to on this boat. Every last one of them used a conventional rods and reels-as was the appropriate equipment for the task at hand... or so I thought. They are the type where you basically lower your line down along side the boat following the Captains toot of the horn and wait for a fish to strike.

Well, at the sound of the horn I looked astern where dear Uncle Paul was standing tall amongst the drop liners with what must have been an 8 or 10 foot surf rod. Men were ducking as he waved his rod vigorously to cast his line and sinker out towards the horizon in what was open sea all around the boat. I heard some one break his chops and asked him "what the heck are you doing with that thing? Uncle Paul politely replied "I'm going to catch the fish that none of you will find under the boat". That I thought was truly thinking outside of the box and a life lesson to be learned without question.

To use his phrase "That's Neat!"
