One Last Hug

Dear Joe and Dale

I may not be able to visit with you today or tomorrow so I am writing to share my remembrances about your dad with you.  He and I have been friends for over thirty years.  We met at Fox Hollow Golf Course and played in the same group.  Because we were so much alike (we hated to lose) we became partners in all the membership tournaments.  We did very well but when we lost we did not give up until the last putt was in.  When your dad stopped playing, we met monthly for lunch at his favorite venues, DiMaios in Berkeley Heights and the Spanish Tavern.  Throughout lunch he would tell me about his family and their exploits.  Be assured he loved you and his grandchildren with all his heart.

When your dad became ill, I visited him in Morristown, and being the fussy eater he was (he always raved about home cooking), he complained about the food.  I brought him lunch from DiMaios on one visit and he devoured it.  Since returning home, I had the opportunity to visit him on a few occasions.  I could tell he was not doing well but he uttered not a word of complaint.  In fact, he complimented the people who were caring for him.

I will miss your dad and the fun times we shared.  At the end of each visit we would give each other a manly hug and say goodbye.  I wish I had the chance to hug him one more time.
