“Sam the Mailman”
Sam Machrone, 95, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 20, 2019 at Ocean Medical Center, Brick, NJ.
Funeral is from the Mastapeter Funeral Home, 400 Faitoute Ave., Roselle Park, on Monday, January 28, 2019 at 9:15am. A Funeral Mass will be offered in St. Theresa R. C. Church in Kenilworth at 10:30am. Interment will follow to Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Visitation will be 1 to 4:30pm on Sunday.
Born in Kenilworth, NJ he later resided in Roselle where he was a member of the Roselle Police Auxiliary for seven years. He reached the rank of sergeant. Sam moved to Garwood in 1959 and lived there until 1986. He then moved to Holiday City Silverton, Toms River.
Sam was employed for many years with the American Can Co. of Newark as a machinist. After he left, he joined the Postal Service of Scotch Plains and worked there until his retirement in 1986.
Sam was a United States WWII Army combat veteran. He spent ten months with the 69th Infantry as a machine gunner. He transferred to the Army Air Force and was taking tests to be an Air Force Cadet when he was recalled by the Infantry and sent overseas. While in England, he was selected to attend additional training to become an Armored Artificer. Sam was then transferred to the Ninth Armored Tank Division where he became an assistant driver. He was in the Battle of the Bulge and helped to liberate Bastion. He also participated in the capture of the Bridge at Remagen.
Sam was recognized for heroism during the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary heroism in military operations against an armed enemy. He also received three Battle Stars: The Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Service Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal of Freedom.
He was a member of St. Anne’s Holy Name Society, a union member of N.A.L.C. # 4102 of Scotch Plains Post Office, and a VFW member in Scotch Plains and then Garwood Post 6807.
Predeceased is his beloved wife Phyllis (nee: Della Sala) Machrone, two dear sisters Dorothy Machrone and Florence Materia, and a dear brother Robert Machrone.
Sam is survived by two loving children Barbara Perlingero and her husband Anthony and Richard Machrone and his wife Michelle, three adored grandchildren, Lauren, Mark, and Elise, and two dear sisters Rose Bauer and Betty Machrone. .
