Bernard A. McNamee, “Bernie” 82, of Union passed away on July 1, 2018, at Cornell Hall, Union. Bernie was born on Nov 13th 1935 and raised in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He went to Bethlehem Catholic in high school and moved to Elizabeth, NJ June of 1953.
Our dad also served in the Army from October in 1956 – July of 1958 at Fort Niagara at a Nike Missile battery. After he got out of the Army he married the Love of his life Ellen Buckley a few months later in September 1958. They went on a honeymoon together in Hawaii that he always fondly talked about to us kids.
Bernie was the son of the late Joseph McNamee and Rose Brown. He was predeceased by his wife Ellen Ruth Buckley who he had loved and missed for over 30 years since she passed and his brother, Joseph McNamee. Bernie was a father to Brian, Tamra and Barton McNamee who he loved very much and was proud of each one of his kids; Grandfather to Amanda, Katie, Ally, Anthony and Jon. He loved his Grandkids so much, always so proud of each one of them in their own way. Always bragging about each one of them to his friends and whomever would listen. Each of his grandkids were very close to him, loved him and were devoted to grandpa. They will have a lifetime of memories and pictures to remember him. Brother of Rose Theresa Hoelzel. He was an Uncle to Eddie, Sue, Richard, Karen, Roger Patricia Ann, Billy, Stacey, Stephanie and Colleen. Again he was so much more than just an Uncle, He was Uncle Bernie, the fun uncle who made you laugh, you always knew you would have a good time whenever he was around. Uncle Bernie was the uncle who would throw a mink coat around his shoulder and dance in the middle of the party down in Mt Laurel even though he couldn’t really dance. Bernie was also a god father, great uncle, a father in law, a nephew, a good friend to many at Nugent’s, the Elks along with all his friends he went up to the Irish Catskills and Ireland.
Bernie graduated College in June of 1965 At Seton Hall University by going to night school with a major in Accounting.
Bernie was very active in the community. He was an usher here at St Gens for over 40 years, he was on the St Gens Finance committee, Cub Scout leader, was President of the Elmora Youth League and an umpire and coach for over 15 years.
