Bruce I. Spender, 70, of 416 Buhler Avenue, Pine Beach passed away on Saturday, June 23, 2018 after a long illness. He loved his home on the river and shared it with his long-time companion, Pirapong Hongvisitkul.
Bruce graduated from New Dorp High School in 1965 attended Staten Island Community College and later graduated from New York Institute of Technology becoming a master mainframe computer technician.
A weekend resident as a boy, he attended Sunday School at the Pine Beach Chapel and was a happy Boy Scout at the Chapel sponsored Pine Beach Troop 31.
He certainly enjoyed the beach, the dock, and especially “King of the Raft.” Later in life he became an experienced pilot, owning a plane at the Miller Air Park.
Bruce was a life-long summer resident of Pine Beach, retiring in his early 40’s to the beloved home on the river after a life altering stroke. In recent years esophageal cancer presented a major challenge and was most debilitating.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Edith and Frederick Spender and brother, Gordon.
Services will be held at the Pine Beach Chapel on Thursday, June 28 at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at the family plot in Staten Island, New York. He is at peace at last and the Chapel of his youth is a final testament to his life.
