Karen Sue Appel-Lyon, born Karen Fletcher on 8/8/1940 to Etta Mae Bassnett-Fletcher and Melvin Fletcher in Mannington, WV passed away peacefully on 12/18/17. She was the daughter of a coal miner and loving sister to Penny and Butch who predeceased her in her youth. Her mother made the courageous decision to move the family to Orange, NJ where she later married Jack Bottorff who became Karen’s loving “Dad”.
She lived in Wayne, NJ and became an RN at Orange Memorial Hospital where she made lifelong friends. She then became a missionary nurse in Alaska where she met and married her first husband of over 30 years, Gary Appel who predeceased her. She was a labor and delivery nurse at CMC in Toms River for over 20 years. She went on to marry her lifelong friend Robert Lyon and lived happily in Bayville for many years until Bob’s passing. In her retirement she volunteered at the Open Door Pregnancy Center where she continued to touch lives. She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Toms River and her faith was her anchor. She was a beacon of faith for all who knew her and a fighter until the very end when she lost her battle with Alzheimers.
She is survived by her son Matthew Appel and his wife Kerry and their kids Joseph, Carley, Matthew and Grady; her daughter Jaci Dompieri and grandson Jack; and her son Brian Appel and his wife Michele and their kids Carina, Amelia and Brody. She was a mom to many and loved by all. She was an avid gardener and baker and her legendary apple pies will be missed almost as much as her.
