Obituary for Michael G. Mayer

Michael G. Mayer, 91, of Kenilworth, NJ, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, September 26, 2017.

Funeral is from the Mastapeter Funeral Home, 400 Faitoute Ave., Roselle Park on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 8:45am. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Theresa R. C. Church in Kenilworth at 10am. Cemetery is private.

Visitation will be on Thursday 6 to 9pm.

Born in Newark, NJ, Michael grew up in Union, NJ, before moving to Kenilworth, NJ 69 years ago.

He was a telephone repairman for AT&T for 39 years and Merck for 6 years, retiring many years ago.

Michael served his country in the United States Navy during WWII as a Signalman First Class on LST 637 participating in several major campaigns such as the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal with three stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon one Star, American Theatre Medal, and the Victory Medal.

He was a founder of St. Theresa’s Church in Kenilworth and a long time volunteer with church events, member, past president and treasurer of St. Theresa’s Holy Name Society.

Served as a past chairman on the Kenilworth Board of Adjustment and a longtime volunteer for the Children’s Specialized Hospital in Mountainside, NJ.

Michael is predeceased by his loving daughter Barbara Mayer.

Surviving is his beloved wife of 70 years Louise Mayer, two loving children Richard Mayer and Diane Maines and her husband John, grandchildren and their families, Matthew McCabe (Cristina) and his children Logan and Brendan, Timothy McCabe (Lynn) and his children Ana, Cecilia and Kellan, Suzanne (Clay) and her children Zachary and Nathan, and Nancy and her daughter Madison and Kristin (Chris).

In lieu of flowers please make donations to Children’s Specialized Hospital, 150 New Providence Rd., Mountainside, NJ, 07092 in Michael’s memory.
