Obituary for Alvin "Hap" Stevens
Alvin Halstead "Hap" Stevens, 94, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 28 at the Veterans Memorial Home in Edison. Mr. Stevens was raised in Kenilworth and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1942.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the visitation on Friday, July 31, 2015 from 6 to 8pm with a service at 7:30pm in the Mastapeter Funeral Home, 400 Faitoute Ave., Roselle Park.
“Hap” was a WWII veteran who proudly served with the USMC First Division at the Battle of Guadalcanal in the Pacific Theater. Having contracted malaria he returned to the Naval Hospital in Lynn, Massachusetts to finish his tour of duty, where he was joined by his wife, the late Agnes Stevens (nee: Schneider) of Elizabeth, NJ
Hap returned to Kenilworth and joined his two brothers at Stevens Steel Construction.
He was an independent truck operator and later joined NU Car Carriers in Edison for many years. He had an exemplary safety record and later trained new drivers.
Upon retiring in 1985, Hap stayed active from his home in Rahway rebuilding lawn mowers for neighbors and friends. Hap’s pragmatism and work ethic served as an inspiration to his colleagues and family.
Hap was predeceased by his wife, Agnes, and his son, Peter F. of Colonia. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Ann and Thomas P. Coyle of Wall, his daughter Penny Stevens of Howell, his daughter-in-law Patricia Stevens of Colonia, his grandchildren Christine Costello, Thomas S. Coyle, Peter P. Stevens, Gary Stevens, Dawn Picaroni, Laura Barton and nine great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family requests, if you wish, donations to the Wounded Warrior Project.
